- When introducing any new ration to horses, always introduce gradually over a 1-2 week period.
- Feed an appropriate level of pellets for your horse’s bodyweight up to a maximum of 2.5kg of pellets per meal (as a guide use daily total pellet feeding rates ranging from 0.5-1.5kg at 300kg, to 2.0-3.0kg at 600kg) along with at least 1% of your horse’s bodyweight daily as roughage and the balance as pasture.
- Vary the amount of pellets fed with the stage and condition of the horse and with seasonal availability and quality of hay and pasture.
- For example increase up to double the level of pellet feeding to mares during lactation when their demand for nutrition increases dramatically.
- As a general rule, at least 50% of the weight of the daily diet for horses should be forage.
- Ensure that clean fresh water is available at all times.
